Insulation: Out With The Old, In With The New

If you have a high energy bill or have a problem controlling your home’s temperature there’s a good chance it’s time to replace your insulation.

Insulation has many benefits for your home. First, insulation regulates your home’s temperature. Having the right type of insulation and installing it properly will ensure your house stays cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Needless to say, this helps reduce your energy bills! If your house is well insulated, the cold or warm air created by your air conditioner or heater will keep that cold or warm air in the house and not escape through tiny cracks or holes in the insulation or walls of your house. Also, insulation creates a barrier to keep unwanted moisture out.  Another way to prevent a water problem is by insulating your cold-water pipes to help prevent condensation and water damages. Since insulation serves as a barrier in between your home and outside, it will also keep allergens and environmental pollutants out keeping your home clean and comfortable.

How do you know when it’s time to replace your insulation?

Over time, insulation settles and starts to leave cracks or holes allowing moisture to enter your attic. This causes the attic to become damp and then becomes a prime spot for the growth of mold and mildew. Mold and mildew affect the air quality in your home, so if you notice the smell of mold, water leaks or allergic symptoms, it’s time to check out your attic. Insulation is a perfect home for rodents, insects or even birds. So, having fresh insulation and closing any gaps will get rid of these unwanted roommates. Finally, the most common indicator is having heating and cooling issues. If your attic is not well insulated, it is hard to regulate and control the temperature in your house, because the hot or cold air is escaping through the attic.
